The Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition debuted a few days ago in China as the fastest-charging smartphone the world has ever seen, with its 210 W brick being advertised as able to charge the phone fully in just nine minutes. The mid-range phone has now been put through a charging test, with results not quite matching Xiaomi’s claims but still well ahead of the competition.
Xiaomi finally debuted its highly vaunted, new charging technology earlier this week. The company launched the Redmi Note 12 series in China, with the Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition featuring 210 W fast charging advertised to charge the phone in just 9 minutes. Its real-world performance may not be quite as impressive, however.
In a charging test by Charger Labs, the Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition manages to reach a peak charging wattage of 184.85 W about three minutes in. As can be expected of such high power outputs, it doesn’t charge at such lofty heights for long either as it drops down to lower wattages. On average, however, the Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition charges at well above 120 W.
While Xiaomi advertises the mid-range phone as being able to charge to 100% in nine minutes, Charger Labs’ test sees the Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition do it in 10 minutes and 10 seconds. Not quite matching Xiaomi’s claim but close enough, and faster than just about every other smartphone that has been made—and by quite a distance, too.
More impressively, it manages to do that without generating much heat. At its hottest during the test, the Redmi Note 12 Pro Discovery Edition only reached a temperature of 43.3°C. Comparatively, the iPhone 14 Pro Max gets as hot as 45.8℃ when charging at its much less impressive peak wattage of 29 W.
