Reputedly, Samsung plans to bring its ‘Light’ performance profile to the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Already available on the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4, the performance profile favours battery life and cooling over processing speed.
According to renowned leaker @UniverseIce, Samsung is turning towards software to improve the battery life of its next flagship smartphone series. With the Galaxy S23 series expected to offer comparable battery capacities to the current Galaxy S22 series, the software tweak should allow people to prioritise battery life when needed without switching to power saver mode.
Specifically, @UniverseIce claims that Samsung will port its ‘Light’ performance profile to the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, it is unclear whether the company will enable this on their predecessor as well, considering its availability on the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Fold4. For reference, it is already possible to enable the feature on most Samsung devices, although you must be happy with using ADB commands to do so.
Unfortunately, Samsung has never explained what changes ‘Light’ performance mode makes to improve battery life. As the screenshot below shows, Samsung implies that it caps processing speeds, albeit without capping display resolution at 60 Hz. Additionally, the mode does not work when gaming. Hence, do not expect this feature to yield better battery life from the Galaxy S23 series during gaming sessions. Hopefully, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 delivers some efficiency improvements over the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Galaxy S22 series too.
