Taking the mantle from one of the best Android phones available, there are high hopes for the Samsung Galaxy S22. Since the smartphone has seen countless leaks and rumours ahead of its release, here’s everything we know about the latest handset.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series is expected to consist of the vanilla model, alongside the larger Galaxy S22 Plus and the flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Sitting high up in the Android market, the Galaxy S21 – as well as the Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra – is a tough phone to beat, and we can only hope that the successor to the S series is as well-loved.
The S22 series was initially expected to launch in January 2022, since the S21 arrived in late January 2021. But it’s not a huge surprise to see it come a month later instead, especially since the Galaxy S21 FE is expected to be unveiled in January instead.
It also matches with another well-known tipster, Jon Prosser (via Twitter), who believes that the line-up will be revealed and available for pre-order on 8 February, and arrive in stores on 18 February.
This suggests that the main camera will be a new sensor, which would hopefully bring an upgrade to the image quality. Though keep in mind that more megapixels don’t always make for better pictures.
However, a recent leak suggested that the S22 Ultra will pack a new camera feature, Detail Enhancer, which should do wonders for picture quality. This feature will allow for more detail when shooting at 108MP and supposedly take better macro shots than the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
Ice Universe (via Weibo) also revealed some more details about the camera, with the sensors matching FrontTrons predictions. However, it also mentions that the S22 Ultra will include a 108-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 12-megapixel 3x optical zoom lens and a 12-megapixel 10x optical zoom lens, making it almost identical to the S21 Ultra, albeit with a couple of extra pixels in the zoom lenses.
Finally, another rumour about the S22 Ultra camera; GalaxyClub (via GSMArena) claims that the S22 Ultra will have a 109-megapixel sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 10x zoom and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x zoom. This setup is the exact same as its predecessor, which would make the S22 Ultra’s camera pretty underwhelming at best.
We’ve also heard that the Galaxy S22 won’t come with a ToF (time of flight) sensor – a sensor Samsung used on some S20 series models, but not on the S21. Considering Samsung ditched this sensor for the Galaxy S21, it’s hardly a surprise to hear it might not come back for the S22 and we can’t really say we’ve missed it. This could always change if further functionality was added.
